Quick story, just to kill time. I'd have gone and told someone else, but, no one understands when it comes to the brilliance of the Harveys..

So. Radio Silence. That honestly has to be one of my favorite songs, ever. I listen to my Harveys quite often, but I also leave my ipod on shuffle during the majority of my work day.

Now, Radio Silence has always been one of my favorite songs by them. But, just a minute ago, I decided to unplug my ipod from the small computer speakers that my work supplied me with, and throw my huge dj-like headphones into the ipod. I started Radio Silence from the beginning, stopped working, and just sat there.

Nothing new in the lyrics moved me whatsoever. I mean, it's always been a beautiful song to me, but this time, I just sat there with the volume almost all the way up, but not loud enough to ruin the quality of the music. And the way it just builds up and builds up until the very end.. it just blew me away.

Mind you, this isn't the first time I've done this with this song, but just for some reason.. I fell in love with it all over again.

I just felt the need to give this song the love it deserves - and it definitely deserves its own thread, if nothing else.

It is truly one of my favorite songs. Scottique and I were talking about trying to convince HD and Bound Stems to do a live show together where they only covered each others songs. And I started thinking about how awesome it would be to hear Bobby and Janie screaming the round of "It's Radio Silence" at the end. Of course the looping of Sean's voice is just amazing anyway.

I 'grew up' listening to WHATMMG, and Radio Silence was my favorite track for a long, long time. That being said, it hasn't fallen from the top, but rather, others have grown closer.

I grew up on Merrymakers as well even as my Barsuk loving days look more and more like just a "high school thing" I still like to play Wrecking Ball and Radio Silence. It really brings me back to a good place.

"Radio Silence" was the one that immediately made me aware I indeed had bought something special. I remember listening to it on a bus, probably in Italy, ten years ago almost to the month. In fact, I liked "Radio Silence" so much, that probably is why it took me so long to get to know tracks four through nine.

I had WHATMG on cassette, for the 1st 2 years of my HD experience, and there's always been an
"always love/try to hate" relationship with "Radio Silence"...

The beginning has that "We're not ready yet" sound; low chatter, and moving into position before those first few notes, which made it cool, in a "Let It Be, The Movie", kind of way...
The progression is great, starting below sea-level, constantly rising, and pounding at the end, like a tidal wave of emotion and volume...
I make sure to take a deep breath, before "Just enough knowledge", so that I can belt it out, as loudly, and with just as much feeling as Sean Nelson does...
Lyrically, it's one of WHATMG's best, but it reminds me that I'd be thought of as a better friend, a better human being, if I just shut up more often...
But I'll also use "all hail to another confession", when I'm out at the bars, and someone breaks my TMI-meter...
In another thread we talked about how some albums could be "perfect", if a song or 2 had been left off of an album...
I say WHATMG would lose its perfection, if "Radio Silence" were left off....

I reckon with initial disappointment when "Radio Silence" is at the end of the live set, because it seems like the sort of song that will never come off as well live as on the album.

But then it usually turns out to, after all.

I couldn't see the song anywhere, but at the end of an album, or a show...
The exit Jeff and Sean made at the Mercury Lounge was legen...

Wait for it...

That song gives me goosebumps EVERY TIME I hear it and the release of power after "take cynical saint to the stake and burn him" brings tears to my eyes on the way to work or home and always hope no one notices that my eyes are red when I come in.

One of my favorite things about HD is their tendency to start a song out soft and simple, and build to the point where the singer is yelling over the music, but doing it so steadily that the transitions don't stand out. Many of my favorite HD songs follow this formula, but Radio Silence is the epitome.

That's how I am with "My Human Interactions."

I've had a few tears fall, while listening to "Defrocked"...

Radio Silence is the reason I bought Merrymakers.

I think the live version on LRM single is bliss.
