So last night's dual holiday themed shows were a blast. It was a long day (but in a good way). The early all-ages show kicked off with with the ass-kicking Racetrack (currently the best band in Bellingham in my opinion). Next was Kane Hodder, who was decent enough for what they were (their hardcore style is not really my taste in music). Of course, Harvey came next and blew us away with old favs, new favs, and a brand new song. The set list:
Carlotta Valdez
Sad Sweetheart of the Rodeo
Old Hat (featuring Megan of Racetrack on backing vox)
Problems and Bigger Ones
Sometimes You Have to Work on Christmas (Sometimes)
Wine, Women, and Song
Jack the Lion
Why I'm Lonely
Authenticity
Plague of Locusts (featuring brass section)
Meetings With Remarkable Men (featuring brass section)
Flagpole Sitta (featuring brass section)
---encore---
Wrecking Ball (featuring cello player)
Pike Street/Park Slope (featuring cello player)
Radio Silence (featuring cello player)
Diminishing Returns *brand new*
An unbelievably awesome set. We hung around the Crocodile for about an hour and a half until the next show started. Racetrack was again awesome. John Brion was amazing, though he was losing his voice. It's kind of hard to explain what he did on stage, but it was an experience. The set list of the 21+ show:
Cream & Bastards Rise *brand new*
Sad Sweetheart of the Rodeo
Old Hat (featuring Megan from Racetrack on backing vox)
Problems and Bigger Ones
Sometimes You Have to Work on Christmas (Sometimes)
Why I'm Lonely (featuring Ben Gibbard on lead vox, Sean on piano and backing vox)
Wine, Women, and Song
Jack the Lion
Moral Centralia
Carlotta Valdez
Authenticity
Plague of Locusts (featuring brass section)
Meetings With Remarkable Men (featuring brass section)
Flagpole Sitta (featuring brass section, Ben Gibbard on backing vox)
---encore---
Wrecking Ball (featuring cello player)
Pike Street/Park Slope (featuring cello player)
Radio Silence (featuring cello player)
Diminishing Returns *brand new*
Ben Gibbard singing Why I'm Lonely was a real surprise, and a treat (even though he didn't really know the words to it ). The brass section (The Long Horns borrowed from The Long Winters) was awesome. Ironically enough, the band brought even more energy to the late show. Ah, it was a grand, grand time. _________________ Pray to the God that you don't quite believe in

I must concur that the shows were sweet :)
Racetrack was great. Kane Hodder was ok but wasn't really my thing either. John Brion. Wow. Wow. Wow. I had no idea who he was/what he played before the show, but if I'm ever in LA on a Friday night I'll be checking him out to see what the show sounds like when his voice is 100%...
And Harvey...as usual they were amazing, but there were a couple highlights. Plague of Locusts has always been a favorite and seeing it not once but twice in one night, well it rocked. Same goes for Wrecking Ball. Flagpole at the late show was great, backing vox by Ben (and another mystery guest?) was a treat, as was the crowd sing-along...that was just fun. The Harvey Horns :) were a great addition to both sets, Plague, Meetings and Flagpole were really cool with the horns (but I think the horn guys could use a little practice on the backing vox...:). Finally, not only was the cello a beautiful addition to the encores, so was the cellist... |

Please. Please. Let there be a recording of these. And please let me get a copy. Words cannot even express how badly I want. I would sell certain body part(s).
While we wait for an answer on that, how 'bout telling us about these new songs, Remarkable Man (or other attendees)? _________________ The Annotated King James Version |

The mystery guest was Ben Clark of The Lashes, another Seattle band everyone needs to know... |

Cream & Bastards Rise is a biting rocker.
Diminishing Returns is a quiet slow song that (if I'm not mistaken) includes at least one Sartre reference. _________________ Pray to the God that you don't quite believe in

Sartre? Oh my.
I'm sure I could be more excited for this, though I'm not sure exactly how.
(Out of curiosity, then, and to get a feel for how to read your assessments, how would you characterize the old-new songs? (Moral Centralia, War Buddies, etc.)) _________________ The Annotated King James Version |

Cream & Bastards Rise definitely rocks. I think I need to hear it a few more times to get the lyrics, but it was great in the show-opening slot and sure got me in the mood to rock (as if I needed any help...).
I thoroughly enjoyed Diminishing Returns. I remember the lyrics living up to my expectations for humor and references, but the only one I remember right now is the Sartre bit...again, I think I need to hear it a few more times :)
As for comparing the new-new songs to the old-new songs, they all sound different. Wine/Women, Centralia and War Buddies are all piano-based, neither of these are, although I could see a piano version of Diminishing Returns existing somewhere out there. |
